THE MODEL

Ji is one of the two models of the Porcelain Odyssey collection. With its mesmerising blue porcelain dial and applied rhodium-plated markers, it gives centre-stage to Chinese tradition and artistics elements, yet with a classy and vintage feel. Ji is a limited edition of 250 uniquely-numbered pieces.

THE STORY

Ji (霁) denotes the shade of an unobtainable blue created centuries ago from lapis lazuli. Often considered the most beautiful of blues, its colour was said to look like that of the sky after a storm and was only used in the finest porcelains.

The structure of Ji's dial is reminiscent of French watches of the 1940s/1950s. Accordingly, it features hour dots and baton markers as indexes and an outer "railway" or "chemin de fer" bordering the extremities of the dial. This feature was re-explored through the lens of our brand using a type of Chinese pattern called Huiwen (回纹).

The subdial here is particularly intricate and is an homage to the Chinese concept of Bagua (八卦) or "Eight Trigrams". It is used among other things as a traditional representation of time, with the four central characters, Kun (坤), Li (离), Qian (乾), Kan (坎) representing the four cardinal directions that correspond to the position of the sun in the sky at different times.

The dial is complemented with a handcrafted set of rhodium-plated leaf hands that combine with the applied indexes to stunning effect.

The movement is among the very best in China. It is a custom-made SL-3006 automatic mechanical movement with bi-directional winding, no phantom click (i.e. the entire date mechanism has been removed) and +/- 10 s/d accuracy - on par with its Swiss counterparts.

Finally, the case-back is certainly one of the most striking aspects of the collection. It represents a deeply-embossed figure of an animal of Chinese legend, Kunpeng. Said to be a colossal bird (Peng) with the ability to turn into an aquatic being (Kun), it is used as an allegory of the concept of Yin Yang. Rather than being separate entities, Kun and Peng are just two sides of the same element. Similarly, our goal with Atelier Wen is to break down false dichotomies and combine the experiences of East and West into a greater whole.
